about

WHITE HMONG FUNERAL, MOUTHORGANS IN VIETNAM

The HMONG are a predominant ethnic minority in southern China, northern Laos and northern Vietnam. they come from Guizhou province in China where they are called Miao, certain Miao subgroups who left China in the 19 th century have kept their different cultural identities since, the mouthorgan (qeej) remains their distinctive main instrument. In Ha Giang northern province of Vietnam at the boarder with China, communities of white Hmong are spread on territories that were previously occupied by Lolos or mountainous areas previously unoccupied and of karstic poor soil.

Tracks 1 to 3 is a funeral ceremony recorded 10 km east of Meovac , gathering 100 people in the middle of a hemp field.

1 a large drum is hit, with a qeej player walking around the drum, in the back ground 3 women are singing and crying touching the coffin
2 a large drum is hit, with a qeej player walking around the drum, and 3 men join the 3 crying women to sing and pay respect to the dead
3 a single woman singing and crying next to the coffin

In Dong van sunday market, a man sells QEEJ of 2 different sizes, both made of 6 bamboo tubes, the small one costs 2 millions Dongs because it s new, the big one 1.5 million Dongs because it s old, Mouth organs sound best when new !
