QIANG SONGS, SHAMAN IN SICHUAN CHINA

A small ethnic group of 200 000 people, the Qiangs were squeezed between the Tibetans and the Hans Chinese for centuries, they call themselves RMA . Considered as the source of the tibeto-burmese ethno linguistic category, the modern days Qiang are only a small sub group of the ancient Qiang.The area became famous on may 12 2008 for the earthquake, whose epicentre was in Wenchuan.


HE SHI BI ( HE is his family name and SHI BI is his tittle as a QIANG shaman) from Bai chi village, a man in his 50s performs on tracks 1 to 5. recorded in Song pan village

1,2,3 DI : 2 small parallel flutes of 12 cm long
4,5 shamanic worship of the nature s forces, on track 5 he comes closer to a fountain where he applies a piece of burning iron on his tongue, to show his special power, his ability to control fire, people and nature.

tracks 6 to 12 recorded in Tongshan village, Yanmen, Wen chuan
various songs performed by 2 woman (37 and 55 years old) and a man
(60 years old)
