about

NUOSU (YI) SUNI IN SICHUAN CHINA

Da liangshan in mountainous southern part of Sichuan is home of the main sub group of the YI , who call themselves NUOSU with more than 2 millions people. The particularity of this Yi subgroup is the use of a unique traditional written system, the ancient NUOSU books are used by local shaman called BIMO. Belonging to the tibeto burmese ethno-linguistic family, the various Yi subgroups are 8 millions people, established mostly in Yunnan and southern Sichuan.

GULIYIGUMU a 34 years old woman, who became a SUNI (shamanic healer) 14 years ago when her mother died, she had a revelation and became spontaneously a Suni who can dance, play the drum and have the ability to sing in order to heal people, get rid off bad spirits . The term BIMO is usually associated with the idea of a shaman, but the bimo is able to read ancient Nuosu books and was an authority with a certain power, while the Suni has far less power and is dealing only with superstition. Both BIMO and SUNI are being marginalized by modernity, if the Bimo is closer to a priest nowadays mostly involved in funeral recitation, the Suni is someone who needs a certain trance to achieve some healing / purification.

This is the first part of the ceremony :
She s sitting at home and starts by killing a chicken and goes into a trance, singing and hitting a drum , at the end of this one hour trance , she pulls out the tongue of the dead chicken to check the curves of the cartilage , and is able to forecast the negative future coming to harm the people of the house in which the ceremony took place.
The next step to come is the healing part, where the woman shakes her body with the drum, singing and starts to dance ( 2nd part available on NUOSU (YI) SUNI IN SICHUAN CHINA 2 )
