MOON & LOSSO HA GIANG VIETNAM

Both ethnic groups come from China, and started to migrate south in the 18th century, the LOLO belonging to the YI group within the Tibeto-burmese ethno linguistic category, while the Dao (pronouced Zao in vietnamese and Yao in chinese) belong to the Miao/ Yao or Hmong/ Mien ethno linguistic category. The Lolo divide themselves in Ha Giang province in different sub groups the flower Lolo and the Black Lolo (who call themselves LOSSO), numbering over 3000 people, but millions in China. The Dao diivide themselves in 2 main groups the red who call themselves MIEN and the blue who call themselves MOON, the Dao cham are a sub group of the MOON outside of the main Moon group of the Lantien Yao (dark blue Yao), the majority lives in southern China, northern Laos and northern Vietnam.

The 2 first tracks were recorded in Nam Dan village, Quan Ba district, Ha Giang province
1 DAO CHAM < GAP CHOUN> ceremony for a young boy between 10 and 16 years old to receive an adult name, involving a drum player, a flat gong player, 4 men dancing ( 2 of them using a pair a cymbals each and one man wearing a mask protecting the young boy) and 2 women singing in canon.
2 DAO CHAM <TO NANJOONG> courting song responding performed by 2 men (LI PUKNEUN 35 and LI PUKOUEN 35 years old) and
2 women (LI TICHUNG 27 and PAN TIXAI 43 years old) .

The following tracks were recorded in GUETA village, Meovac district, Ha Giang province
3 2 women canon singing NIA TI VENG 40 years old and LAM TI MI 57 years old
4, 5 wedding song performed by 2 women canon singing NIA TI VENG and LAM TI MI
6, 7 SUONA ( chinese word for this widespread reed instrument ) wedding tunes performed by 2 men
