about

LAO CHAMPASAK ROYAL COURT MUSIC

For some centuries Laos was divided in 3 kingdoms, Luang Prabang in the north, Vientiane in the center and Champasak in the south. The royal court ensemble of Champasak lasted till 1975 and restarted recently without any royal court, the old musicians of this orchestra remember in the 50s learning from a khmer music teacher of the khmer royal court of Phnom penh, so no wonder if the Champasak royal court ensemble sounds just like what is called a Pin Peat orchestra in Cambodia, using the same instruments : a TAPHON 2 sided drum, 2 large xylophones (LANAT AYK), one small xylophone (LANAT THOUM), a circular frame holding 16 small gongs (KHONG VONG), a flute (KHOUY), a Lao oboe (PI KEO), one set of cymbals (SING SAP) and a pair of large drums (GAWNG THAT), performed by 9 men in Champasak city.
