RED & BLACK LAHU IN THAILAND

The LAHU as a tibeto burmese group originated from Yunnan China where 75% of 1 million Lahu people live, 15 % in Myanmar and 10 % in Thailand. Divided into color sub groups : red, yellow, black,white and Lahu Sheleh, the black Lahu being the majority in northern Thailand . The communities of Lahu who migrated out of China in the late 19th century, kept their distinctive musical culture where various sized mouthorgans of 5 bamboo tubes inserted in a gurd are being used solo or by groups of mouthorgan players, all intending to a entertain a crowd of circle dancers.

In Bor kai village, GAYO a 80 years old Akha man who married a black Lahu woman, plays 2 different sized Lahu mouthorgans
1 large mouth organ, 5 bamboo tubes inserted in a gourd, called TOLEIMU in lahu language
2,3 small mouth organ 5 bamboo tubes inserted in a gourd, called NOTOLEI in lahu language
4 a 45 years old woman NAKEU sings her life story
5,6 sad love song performed by Nakeu

In Nam Luang village, Bang Mapha, the red Lahu are celebrating their new year for 2014 on march 7, lasting more or less a week, a totemic structure with 4 bamboo poles holding each a pig s head is set up in each village where mouthorgan players in the centre entertain a dancing crowd composed mostly of women wearing their most prestigious costumes, drunk men and children blowing fire crackers.
