KIRGIZ MANAS IN XINJIANG CHINA

Ili ( Yining ) is a Kazakh autonomous region, in Ili prefecture live 18 000 Kirgiz people and162 000 in all of Xinjiang. The Kirgiz live usually further south in Xinjiang closer to Kirgiztan.

XIA AR GHEN AOKHAN plays komuz ( a 3 stringed fretless plucked instrument ) and sings, he is a kirgiz farmer from a family established in that part of China since 1916, they ve always been living in mountains where they had cattles, horses and sheeps and have been moved to a sedentary life in the 80s to a village called Huosituobie near Kuoketielike south of Tekes / Ili / Xinjiang. His songs have been passed over for 80 years from generations to generations, this style of songs is called MANAS gathering ancient epics and new lyrics.
