KAZAKH 1 DONGBRA / KOBUZ IN ILI XINJIANG CHINA
The 2 essential instruments of Kazakh music, performed by 2 recognized Kazakh music teachers from Yining (Ili) town, also called Gulja by Turkophones, are the DONGBRA (a 2 stringed plucked lute) and the KOBUZ (a 2 stringed bowed instrument, made of wood and a camel skin).
In this part of Xinjiang, ironically called Kazakh Autonomous Region by the communist party, the Kazakh have since the 60s given up or been forced to abandon nomadism, an ancient way of life, shared by Mongols. The nomadism of the Kazakh was based on bringing cattle to the green highlands in summer, setting up the yurt for the family and willing to live in isolation, the music as far as i know in traditional conditions was and is a practice of solo instrumental playing, opposed to the Uyghurs who have a musical tradition of group playing.

the first 3 tracks are played by ADILI HAN ABDULAH who is a dongbra maker, who introduced us to KURMANJIANG ZACCHARIA in his shop.
