JINGPAW (ZAIWA) IN YUNNAN CHINA

Out of 500 000 JINGPAWs , 140 000 live in China ( mostly in Dehong county ) at the boarder with Myanmar and the majority live in Myanmar where they are called KACHIN. In both countries the majority has become christian a 100 years ago. In Dehong, so called DAI JINGPAW autonomous region, the Dais occupy the plains and the Jingpaws live higher up. Divided in subgroups with different languages, most of the people recorded here are ZAIWA ( 100 00 people ). except tracks 26 to 30 : SHIDONG subgroup.

17 GU TUNG YUE WU : BEAT THE NEW RICE grandma s version performed by JIN TING RUI, we had recorded her several times at her home filled with images of Jesus, she came the next morning to wake us up very early in the house of the local school teachers where we slept, she had a dream of her grand mother ponding the rice and remembered suddendly the words of her grand-ma, she grabbed a small recipient to crush chillies and filled it up with rice and hit it with a wooden stick in order to replicate the real ponding of the rice (to separate the grain from the skin) and started to sing .
