about

The HMONGs are around 5 millions people spread from their land of origin : China ( 3 millions people who are subgroups of the MIAOs), and in northern Vietnam (1 million people) and northern Laos with 470 000 people. They migrated southward outside of China in the 19th century and occupied the highlands. Still being called the MEO in Vietnam and Laos, Hmong people refuse that term.

1 In a hard to reach traditional village on a top of a hill, all living beings were there : about 100 adults, 200 children, 50 dogs, 50 pigs, 20 horses, every aspect of Hmong hospitality was there to enjoy, it started with the RAJ : a bamboo reed instrument of 6 holes, then the QEEJ : the 6 bamboo tubes mouthorgan in ban (village) Phou Luang Tai, outside of Luang Prabang, recorded in February 2001

2 I met an old Hmong man local school teacher in KM52, at that time a Hmong settlement by the side of the road 52 km north of Vientiane in february 2001, he had lived in France and explained in french language with a strong southwest flavor the various occasions where someone sings, plays the QEEJ mouthorgan, and the NCAS copper mouth harp. A 80 years old man performing first sings, then plays the same thing with his mouthorgan or with the mouth harp at the end.
"wake up with the rooster, work till dawn, with old age we get sick and witch craft plays a role in a society without doctors, to empower the sick person we call the NENG spirit. An umbrella is being carried symbolically while involved in courting song , singing in front of the house of the girl you like asking for permission to get in. For funerals an old wise guy is needed in order to teach moral to the children, but the funeral is also an important social meeting where young people find each other and at night would use the mouth harp to declare their love"
