DONG (GAEM) LOVE SONGS IN GUIZHOU CHINA

The DONG who call themselves KAM or GAEM are 3 millions people spread from western Hunan, Guizhou, Guangxi and northern Vietnam. They belong to the Tai Kadai ethno linguistic family. The DONG are probably the most famous ethnic group in China, praised for their culture, including architecture, clothes,and their polyphonic singing choirs, the chinese medias have boosted tourism in the area, beautiful young girls dressed up in traditionl clothes, perform this kind of songs for large crowds of tourist, but it was still possible to find genuine farmers performing, outside of the touristic frame.

In Judong village, we found this 33 years old lady SHI SHENYAN, who is often invited to perform with 2 men playing Dong traditional instruments, the 1 st instrument is the Dong PIPA, a plucked lute with 4 strings, the 2nd one is the Dong NIUTUIQIN, a small 2 stringed bowed local violin.
SHI SHUNLING a 57 years old man plays both Dong PIPA and NIUTUIQIN and a good singer, SHI LAOJING 48 years old man plays the NIUTUIQIN and sings, SHI JIANGXIAN is a 18 years old young girl doing back up vocals, behind the main singer.
