DONG ( GAEM ) IN GUIZHOU CHINA

The DONG who call themselves KAM or GAEM are 3 millions people spread from western Hunan, Guizhou, Guangxi and northern Vietnam. They belong to the Tai Kadai ethno linguistic family. The DONG are probably the most famous ethnic group in China, praised for their culture, including architecture, clothes,and their polyphonic singing choirs, the chinese medias have boosted tourism in the area, beautiful young girls dressed up in traditionl clothes, perform this kind of songs for large crowds of tourist, but it was still possible to find grand mothers performing, outside of the touristic frame.

TRACKS 1 to 5 performed by a Dong traditional instruments maker in Shuizhai, the 1 st instrument is the Dong PIPA, a plucked lute with 4 strings, the 2nd one is the Dong NIUTUIQIN, a small 2 stringed bowed local violin. the oldman plays Niu tui qin and sings.
