about

DAI LUE IN YUNNAN CHINA

Mostly concentrated in Xishuangbanna, southern part of Yunnan boardering Myanmar and Laos, the DAI LUE are the main subgroup of Dai, they are more than a million people, over 200 000 in Myanmar, more than 100 000 in Laos and as many in Thailand and smaller communities in Vietnam. The Dai lue also called shui Dai in chinese (water dai) are the northern members of a huge ethno liguistic family that includes tai kadai sub group in Guanxi, Guizhou chinese provinces all the way west to Assam eastern India, they are also supposed to be the ancestors of modern thais of Thailand. Whether called Dai, Tai, Thai or Shan they mostly follow Theravada Buddhism.
This is the second part of a duet of ITA RAM a woman in 40s from Mana village outside of Menghun and a younger man playing the PI, a bamboo reed instrument with a copper reed and 7 holes. They were invited to perform for a newly build house in a banana plantation outside of Galamba along the Mekong. Their performance taking place among groups of drunk men and quiet women started at 9 o clock at night and lasted till 9 in the morning without interruption.
ITA RAM is praised for her voice, her knowledge of ancient stories and her ability to improvise the words within traditional singing patterns.
